Get started with GPT2Notes in three simple steps. Installation takes less than 5 minutes.

1 Install the browser extension

GPT2Notes is available as a Chrome extension. It also works on Edge and other Chromium-based browsers.

Install from Chrome Web Store

What happens during installation?

  • The extension adds a small icon to your browser toolbar
  • It requests permission to access chatgpt.com (required to read conversation content)
  • All data stays local—nothing is sent to external servers unless you sync to Notion

2 (Optional) Connect your Notion account

If you want to export ChatGPT conversations directly to Notion, you'll need to authorize GPT2Notes to access your Notion workspace.

⚠️ Skip this step if you only want local downloads
You can download conversations as Markdown, HTML, JSON, or plain text without connecting Notion. This step is only needed for the Notion sync feature.

Authorize with Notion OAuth

  1. Click the GPT2Notes icon in your browser toolbar
  2. Click "Connect Notion" or "Settings"
  3. Click the "Authorize with Notion" button
  4. You'll be redirected to Notion's authorization page
  5. Select the pages or databases you want GPT2Notes to access
  6. Click "Allow access" to complete the authorization
  7. You'll be redirected back to the extension—you're all set!
ℹ️ Secure OAuth flow
GPT2Notes uses Notion's official OAuth 2.0 flow for secure authorization. Your credentials are never exposed, and you can revoke access anytime from your Notion settings.

3 Export your first conversation

Now you're ready to start exporting!

To export a conversation:

  1. Open any ChatGPT conversation at chatgpt.com
  2. Click the GPT2Notes extension icon in your toolbar
  3. Choose your export format:
    • Notion: Syncs directly to your connected database
    • Markdown: Downloads a .md file
    • HTML: Downloads a styled .html file
    • JSON: Downloads structured .json data
    • ZIP (Premium): Bundles multiple Markdown/HTML/JSON exports via batch export
    • Plain Text: Downloads a simple .txt file
  4. Wait a few seconds while the export processes
  5. Done! Your conversation is saved.

Troubleshooting

Extension icon not showing?

Click the puzzle piece icon in your browser toolbar to see all extensions. Pin GPT2Notes for quick access.

Notion sync fails with "Unauthorized"?

  • Try re-authorizing your Notion account in the extension settings
  • Make sure you selected the correct pages/databases during authorization
  • Check that you haven't revoked access from Notion's settings

Export button is grayed out?

Make sure you're on a ChatGPT conversation page (chat.openai.com/c/...). The extension only works on active conversation pages, not on the home screen.

Images not exporting?

Some formats (like plain text) don't preserve rich formatting. Use HTML or Markdown exports for the most faithful layout.

Known Limitations

  • Bulk export & auto sync: Included with GPT2Notes Premium. Free users can still export every conversation, but only one at a time.
  • Browser support: GPT2Notes is tested on Chrome and Edge. Other browsers may work but aren't officially supported.
  • ChatGPT Plus features: Some advanced ChatGPT outputs (like DALL-E or plugin results) may require manual handling.
  • Large conversations: Conversations with 500+ messages may take longer to export. We're working on optimizations.
